Pope Benedict XVI warns people about the dangers of Facebook. Recently the pope at one of his speeches was talking about how bad Facebook is for people. He says it is not anyone’s true self and it is bad to have more virtual friends than real friends. "It is important always to remember that virtual contact cannot and must not take the place of direct human contact with people at every level of our lives." The 83 year old man who writes all his speeches by hand fears that people will neglect to be “authentic and faithful” in the relationships. "There exists a Christian way of communication which is honest and open, responsible and respectful of others," Pope Benedict said.
He is also scared he is losing more and more followers since the traditional way for Christians to get followers is not using social media, but the Christian religion is showing up on the internet more and more, just not as much as others. So the pope is scared more religions and atheist are writing their opinions and changing the Christians minds about religion.. They have a dedicated “pope2u.net” portal which can give you access to speeches and other information. They also have increased on social media, offering iPhone apps and Facebook pages. The pope does not have a Facebook page of his own so he has not enjoyed “poking” or “liking” anything or anybody yet. But don’t worry if you love Facebook because with Facebook’s 600 million users the pope has aways till he gets everyone to be his follower. The reason why the pope doesn't like Facebook is because of the whole virtual relationship and it has been lead to a factor in sex before marriage.
In a recent poll by the New York Post, 40 percent of women will sleep with men faster if they have texted or Facebooked them even if they haven't gone a date in some cases. The pope represents the Catholic church and Catholics are completely against premarital sex. He will often speak out against some thing if it supports premarital sex. Even though he said all of these negative things about Facebook he said that it's not evil, but if used to tease people, it be horrible. Many Catholics thought that Facebook was a sin and they would be damned, but the pope stated that is was not in the speech. Many people questioned what the popes stance was on the internet before this speech, but still are unsure. He said many times he approves of the internet, but he has a lot of criticism and cons of using the internet. He really just afraid how the way that people will treat other people online.
This article is important because it effects the whole world. The pope, one of the main leaders of the world, spoke out about the new age of technology, the social networks. The craze if spreading quickly around the world and the pope wanted people to be educated before they got a account. It effects our classroom because Greg has talked a lot about his views of Facebook and several people have accounts. To some people it won't matter because they are not Catholic, but some people who have Facebooks and are Catholics will be greatly effected.
