The first theme of this book is to not judge a book by its cover. Paul thinks that Patty is the perfect girl but when he actually begins going out with her, he realizes something completely different.

The second theme of this book is to dig deeper. When Paul is admiring Marry from a far, he thinks that she is his dream girl, but when he takes her to the prom, he realizes that she is more of a sister to him than anything else.

            The third theme of this book is rumors are almost never true. The two rumors Paul heard about (seniors forcing freshman to eat drugs and everyone getting laid on prom night) were both not true.
